Unsacred Hearts are a NYC-based quartet who fit inside the current trend of shaggy, thrift store rock, but transcend the hipster movement by replacing passion for posturing in its musical output. On the band's seven-track release, there's a slew of the usual rock influences you'd expect from a NYC band of this ilk from Velvet Underground to The Strokes, but this band goes one step beyond the norm.
. Besides the obvious and obligatory, there's a strong sense of the '90s Seattle sound a la Pearl Jam and Nirvana found on tracks like the beefy "Heart of the City" or the driving "Plug Me In", as well as some UK punk audible on "Secret Dakota Ring/ No Chance", which allows this band to stand way atop the heap. Unsacred Hearts showcase the type of versatility many of the one-trick ponies in the scene sorely lack, a strength that combined with the stellar songwriting makes for an interesting listen you'll reach for again long after 2004.
