Well, this sure starts off like it might kick ass. The sparse, vaguely Stones-esque intro to “Take It Or Leave It” sets the stage for some kind of new-fangled rock n’ roll tension/release blooze explosion… and then goes absolutely nowhere for the next two minutes.
The inane lyrics (“Yeah, just take it or leave it, Yeah/ Yeah, just lose it or keep it, YEAH”), aren’t helped any by the singer’s Cornell-with-a-cold delivery. Nor do these guys seem to understand that a dramatic pause is completely useless when there’s nothing inspiring preceeding it, during it, or after it.
Jet ape AC/DC on the next tune, “Cold Hard Bitch,” but lack the power of the aforementioned band to nail the dirty hook of the chorus. Kind of catchy though!
“Move On” goes back into Stones territory, with a pleasant Beggars Banquet-style slide guitar that is played by Dashboard Confessional guitarist Andre Warhurst. More inane lyrics aside (Well I been thinking bout the future/Too young to pretend/ Such a waste to always look behind you/You should be looking straight ahead), this acoustic ballad is probably the most believable performance on the EPthus far. Oddly enough, it is the final track, “Rollover DJ” that is the most compelling. All the “borrowed” elements from the first three songs are melded together and performed with something resembling balls. In parts, “DJ” even hints at the kind of song that the Beatles might have covered in their bar-band days. Guys, if this were the first track, this review would have started off a lot differently.
