Somehow Joey Keithley has managed to fit 25 years of D.O.A. into just 229 pages. He gives us the low-down on the band through every era and all members—the road stories, the band fights, the benefits, et. al.
. Yeah, there’s all the requisite pissing, puking, and fighting the early punk bands are famous for, but it’s also a testament to the social and political conscience that has been Keithley and company’s stock in trade since the beginning. Keithley uses a witty, matter-of-fact tone throughout with a seeming encyclopedic knowledge of names, dates, and places. There’s a good amount of rare photos and flyers as well. I couldn’t sum it up any better than Joe himself did, so here’s the stats for ya:
D.O.A.
25 years
212,000 beers consumed
3000 shows
9 riots
500,000 records sold
13 CDs
10 vans
33 releases
331 tires
9 lives (not used up yet)
30 countries
27 busts
938,000 miles traveled
15 roadies
28 punch-ups
12 deaf soundmen
Whether you’re a fan of D.O.A. or not, this is a must-read and is a fine addition to the growing genre of books documenting the social history of the genre known as “hardcore” punk.
