What would country music be today without Johnny Cash? And what country music collection would be complete without Johnny Cash’s Live Recordings From The Louisiana Hayride? This collection of 16 songs is culled from performances spanning from late 1955 to 1963…a period during which Cash dominated the Hayride.

And from this recording, it’s evident why he did. You could tell, even back then, that his strong quaking voice, dark disposition and strong playing were something special. Of course, you can no longer see it, but you can feel it when listening to this CD.

The live version of “So Doggone Lonesome” is beautifully melodic, it’s enough to make you cry, but the strength heard in Cash’s voice is enough to make you stand up and carry on. And then there’s the song that made him:” I Walk The Line.” This is a son that will never get old. And true rockabilly fans will never get tired of listening to this live rendition of it. His voice is soft, but the passion heard within is overwhelming. Musically, it might be a simple song, but few songs have resonated so much in the minds of country fans. Aside from these two masterpieces there are other solid listens such as the mournful “Folsom Prison Blues” and the boisterous “The Rebel -- Johnny Yuma”. In fact, the entire CD is full of gems.

And for those of you who love comedy and on-stage banter, Cash proves that he’s the master. However, for some who just want to hear the music, this can be a bit frustrating. But, if you’re one with an open-mind, then kick your feet up and enjoy the experience.

While Johnny Cash’s Live Recordings From The Louisiana Hayride is an essential, my only gripe is that the quality isn’t the best. Other than that, buy this CD. You’ll never be able to put it down.
