KILL
2 THIS MASS.[DOWN.]-SIN.[DRONE.] ABSTRACT/LOUDSPEAKER |
|
| The British band Kill 2 This has finally brought their music to the American shores with their release mass.[down.]-sin.[drone.]. Having released three discs over the last nine years, Kill 2 This has honed their craft and certainly set their best foot forward to the colony. | ||
| The
English quartet plays an accessible brand of metal that is sure to find
a wide audience. Throwing Burton C. Bell-ish vocals over old Machine Head
guitars, Kill 2 This melds solid elements to produce an album with depth
and breadth. The band is not afraid to try new things by mixing up time
signatures, throwing in acoustic guitars, strings and harmonizing vocals.
Filled with introspective lyrics, mass.[down.]-sin.[drone.] is one of the rare metal albums that sets an atmosphere while maintaining a straight-forward attack. Guitarist Mark Mynett formed the band back in 1996 and is the driving creative force behind the band. Not afraid to take risks, Mynett will throw in mid-eastern melodies and follow them with thick chords. Virtually everything that he tries, he pulls off on this release. Bassist Pete Stone also is allowed some free reign and shows off his skills early and often. Drummer Steve Rooney gracefully goes from pounding the skills to caressing them and back again. The one member of the band that pretty much keeps his sound the same throughout is singer Phillip Bretnall. Bretnall’s throaty, clean vocals are pretty unique and appealing but they don’t seem to range as much as the other instruments. Kill 2 This’s mass.[down.]-sin.[drone.] may prove to be one of the best British imports, if not one of the best albums of the year. A must listen for metal fans both home and abroad. |
