Whenever you get new CD’s, especially demos, it’s always a crapshoot. You go into the listening very wary of what is going to come back at you. Most times, demos are the few songs Hopeful Band A has been able to afford to record and get sent out to as many people as humanly possible who might give it a listen. It almost makes you wonder if when first putting a demo into the player why one isn’t doing so covered in haz-mat gear.
It was with this sense of caution that I first put On A Dead Machine’s three song demo into my CD player. I was immediately surprised by how good it was. Vocals that are one moment clean with an almost ethereal quality and then accented with screamed hooks. Guitars that effortlessly float from clean to distorted and back again, a strong bass and drum showing providing a solid low end with nice fills and bridges, and a production balance that is absent on many demo recordings.
The four members of On A Dead Machine, vocalist Brian Link, guitarist Adam Lucchesi, bassist Hans Amelang, and drummer Ed Harris know how to play well together, and if this demo is any indication, On A Dead Machine is a band to keep an eye out for, and after listening to “The morning After..”, “Autograph”, and “Post Modern Love”, I wanted to hear more from this Memphis based foursome.
