STRANGE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC

Guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani has been constantly innovating the art of the six-tring with each album he's released since the mid '80s. Ironically though, he's never attained the mainstream success of the rock band of the day, including that of some of his students, Kirk Hammett (Metallica), David Bryson (Counting Crows), and Larry LaLonde (Primus).

Perhaps, with Strange Beautiful Music, he's started endorsing the opinion that if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. With this release, he's acquired the assistance of bassist Matt Bisonette and drummer Jeff Campitelli seemingly in hopes of winning over the rap rock and alt metal crowd while still staying true to the old fans. His sound on the album has a more modern rock edge, but bits of the “Surfing With the Alien” Satriani do shine through every now and then. This isn't something I'd be pumpin' while driving around the neighborhood, but it's hard not to appreciate it and it does make great background music for pretty much anything.

(Editor’s note: this was released June 2002---but it’s always fun to revisit things I missed...
