Hailing from a utopian wasteland oversaturated with b-list cover bands and whiny white boy punk rock, Long Island's Unearthly Trance doom metal assault is comprised of a six-track gloom filled endeavor that comes off slow, deep, and hard. And, it's produced by Stephen O'Malley, king of the doom metal battalion, so you know it's going to be adventurous, yet borderline tedious, too. While the usual long, drawn out dirge formula is apparent here (the one where a chord is played every ten seconds or so and it sounds like the rhythm section is on Dramamine), this earth-moving trio picks the pace up in certain spots, making the listening experience a bit more comfortable. Unearthly Trance is not for those with attention span issues. It is for those that dig Sabbath, St. Vitus, Electric Wizard, and for those that enjoy music that seeps out slow as molasses.
