Here’s another high-energy, self-deprecating slab of silliness from Riverside, CA’s kooky Casilla brothers—Frank, Eddie, and Jorge. Well, kooky, may be a bit of a strong word for it, but damn if their music isn’t fun. For 13 years now they’ve been blending punk, metal, ska, and Latino music in to one big tasty ball o’ happy that’s accented with a crazy fun horn section.
They play music that is fast. It’s upbeat and entertaining. And it’s even socio-political. Tracks like “Ethnic Cleansing Day” and “The Rat Trap”, while sounding cool and hip, actually have a huge message about how different ethnicities and people of color are treated in this country. The boys do sing some of the songs in Spanish, which always ads a nice touch. Tunes like “Nada En La Cabeza” and “La Llorona” add a new dimension by speaking to their own in their own language and giving them the head’s up. The boys produced this lp themselves, so it’s something they’re quite proud of. Although actually released last July, it just came skidding across my desk about the time they played CBGB here in the city. The title cut and single, “Steady As She Goes” bumps and bounces with a heavy ska influence, but the coolest part has got to be the horns. Those boys swing it hard and tight.
